CSHS UIL Wins Second Place at Laredo Alexander

 

On Saturday, January 13 the Carrizo Springs H.S. UIL team traveled to Laredo Alexander High School to participate in the 13th annual Alexander Academic Tournament.  Schools ranging from 2A-5A attended the popular contest including: United South, Cotulla, Cigarroa, Eagle Pass, Martin, Nixon, United, Zapata, and others.  Once again the Wildcat team showed its academic prowess by capturing a top three sweepstakes spot, three 1st place team awards and numerous individual honors.

The results of the meet are as follows:  In Spelling and Vocabulary Bianca Ortiz won the 6th place trophy.  In Literary Criticism Candice Masar won 5th place.  In Ready Writing Victoria Garcia won 2nd place.  In Prose Interpretation Arkie Tassew won 1st place, Fernando Esquivel 5th place, and Markose Butler 6th place.  In Poetry Interpretation Rosie Mendiola ended up in 3rd place after having tied for 1st place, which was then settled by a blind draw.  Magalieh Acosta won the 6th place trophy.  The Journalism competitors really crushed the competition as they brought home not only 8 individual trophies, but a first place team award.  In Feature Writing Maryella Medina won 3rd place, Lizette Rocha won 4th place and Natasha Riojas won 5th place.  In Editorial Writing Maryella Medina won 2nd place, Lizette Rocha 3rd place and Natasha Riojas 5th place.  In News Writing Maryella Medina captured the top spot, and Natasha Riojas won 4th place.  The team of Maryella Medina, Natasha Riojas, and Lizette Rocha won the 1st place team Journalism award.  In the Math events the Wildcats continue their domination.  In Mathematics Nicolas Costilla and Ramon Medina tied for 6th place.  In Number Sense Steven Martinez won 1st place, R.J. Saldivar won 2nd place, and Nicolas Costilla won 4th place.  The team of Steven Martinez, R.J. Saldivar, and Nicolas Costilla won 1st place Number Sense.  In Calculator Applications Kristi Blake won 1st place, Stephanie Estrada won 2nd place, Carol Howard 3rd place, and R. J. Saldivar won 4th place.  The team of Kristi Blake, Stephanie Estrada, and Carol Howard won the 1st place Calculator Applications trophy.

Other students who made the trip to Laredo include:  Hannah Romo, Jose Mendez, Nicolas Sunderland, David Ledesma, Kimberly Mendoza, Alysia Robledo, Anna Mendoza, Merce Doria, Heather Bullard, Demi Cruz, Omar Salazar, Anthony Martinez, Melissa Yebra, Brianna Waggoner, Clarissa Molina, Kayla Benavides, Valerie Jaime, Theresa Benavidez, Christopher John, Ray De La Fuente, Adrian Jaramillo, Ramon Medina, Rogelio Diaz, Cristy Cardona, Valerie Salgado, Juan Nieto, Caitlyn Autry, and Roxanna Guzman.

Congratulations to all these fine competitors and their coaches for a great showing.  Also, thank you to all the parents of these fine young people who encourage them to excel in academic competition.  The next outing for the team will be at the Pleasanton H.S. Tournament in Plesanton on January 27.  We encourage everyone to come out and support academic competition.  “Experience the Power of Knowledge”
