CSHS UIL Team Travels To Laredo United South
On Friday, December 15 and Saturday, December 16, the Carrizo Springs High School UIL Academic Team traveled to Laredo to compete in the annual United South High School Tournament. This was the first full meet for the Wildcats and they did very well bringing home numerous individual top honors as well as the third place overall sweepstakes award. Laredo Alexander and United Schools, both 5A powerhouses, won 1st and 2nd respectively.
The following are the meet results: In Current Issues and Events Omar Salazar won the 3rd place trophy. In Spelling and Vocabulary Theresa Benavides won 2nd place, Bianca Ortiz won 4th place and Omar Salazar and Neida Escamilla tied for 6th place. The team of Theresa Benavides, Bianca Ortiz, Omar Salazar and Neida Escamilla won the second place team medals. In Ready Writing, veteran division, Tiffany Deleon secured the 2nd place trophy while Victoria Garcia won the 5th place award. In the novice division, Neida Escamilla won the 5th place award. In Journalism Natashia Riojas won 1st place, Lizette Rocha 3rd place and Maryella Medina 6th place. The team of Natashia, Lizette, and Maryella won the 2nd place team award. In Literary Criticism Candice Masar dominated the competition by winning her 2nd consecutive 1st place trophy while teammate Paloma Lopez captured the 5th place award. In Extemporaneous Persuasive Speaking Victoria Garcia won 6th place. In Poetry Interpretation Rosie Mendiola won 4th place while teammate Hannah Romo won 6th place. In Prose Interpretation, Arkie Tassew won 2nd place, Fernando Esquivel won 5th place and Markose Butler won 6th place. In ninth grade Science Kimberly Mendoza won 4th place. In the tenth grade division Nicolas Costilla won 6th place. In the eleventh grade division David Ledesma won 6th place. In ninth grade Mathematics R.J. Saldivar won 4th place. In the tenth grade division Javier Ponce won 3rd place and Ramon Medina won 4th place. In the eleventh grade division Nicolas Sunderland won 3rd place. In ninth grade Number Sense R.J. Saldivar won 3rd place while Jose Mendez won 6th place. In the tenth grade division Nicolas Costilla won 2nd place while Ramon Medina won 4th place. In the eleventh grade division David Ledesma won 1st place while Steven Martinez won 2nd place. The team of Nicolas Costilla, David Ledesma, and Steven Martinez won 2nd place. In ninth grade Calculator Applications R.J. Saldivar won 1st place while Jose Mendez came in a close second. In the tenth grade division J.J. Matinez won 3rd place. In the eleventh grade division Stephanie Estrada won 1st place, Heather Bullard 3rd place, and Steven Martinez 5th place. In the twelfth grade division Kristi Blake won 2nd place. The team of Kristi Blake, Stephanie Estrada, and R.J. Saldivar won the 1st place team award.
Other participants who attended the meet include: Manny Abundez, Natalie Castro, Alysia Robledo, Anna Mendoza, Melissa Yebra, Nikki Marroquin, Briana Waggoner, Merce Doria, Matthew Mendoza, and Anthony Martinez.
Congratulations to these fine competitors on a job well done. In addition, congratulations to their coaches and their parents who continue to guide and encourage them to do so well. Coaches who accompanied the competitors to Laredo are as follows: Daniel Valerio, Jr., Rosa Treviño, Marisa Tobias, Jonas Treviño, Jose Treviño, Jr., Celia Villarreal, Rachel Garza, Dellanira Alvarado, and Ruben Z. Escamilla. Transportation was provided by Mr. Julio Betancourt who made sure the team had a safe and pleasant trip. Special thanks to Mrs. Sandra Little for helping out with transportation.
The next outing for the UIL participants is on January 12 & 13 when they will travel back to Laredo and participate in the Laredo Alexander H. S. Academic Tournament. We invite everyone to come out and support the academic talents of these exceptional young individuals.
