UIL District Champions!!!


29 Students Advance to Region and One-Act Play Advances to Area

On Monday, March 26, and Thursday, March 29, the Carrizo Springs U.I.L. team participated in the 2007 28-AAA District Literary/Academic Meet which was held in Devine.  Forty-Five CSHS students attended the two-day meet and competed against students from Devine, Hondo, Crystal City and Pearsall.  On Saturday, March 31, the CSHS One –Act Play competed in the last part of the Literary/Academic Meet.  The Wildcat Academic Team along with the UIL One-Act Play flexed its literary/academic muscle to win the coveted 28-AAA Championship plaque and in the process advanced twenty-nine competitors to the Regional Academic Meet.  In addition, the C.S.H.S. One-Act Play will advance to the Area competition in Lytle, TX.  “It takes a collaborative effort to win this kind of championship and this is exactly what it was.  We are extremely proud of all our UIL Academic and One-Act Play participants.  I’m so happy for our school and community that the academic championship has returned to Carrizo Springs after a 12 year absence.” said UIL Academic Director, Ruben Escamilla.  “We are so proud of the fantastic job that these young people did!” added Daniel Valerio Jr., UIL Coordinator. 

The first day of competition, March 26, gave the Wildcats the best start they have had in a long time.  In Editoral Writing Natasha Riojas captured the district championship by winning first place while teammate Maryella Medina came in right behind her at second place.  In Feature Writing Maryella Medina won the second place and teammate Lizette Rocha won 6th place.  In Headline Writing Natasha Riojas won second place while teammate Neida Escamilla won 4th place.  In News Writing Maryella Medina claimed the district championship by winning first place while Lizette Rocha won 3rd place. The Journalism team of Maryella Medina, Natasha Riojas, Lizette Rocha, and Neida Escamilla won the Journalism team championship plaque.  In Social Studies Markose Butler won 3rd place.  In Lincoln Douglas Debate Manny Abundez won 4th place, Natalie Castro won 5th place and Valerie Salgado won 6th place.  In Spelling and Vocabulary Theresa Benavides won second place and Bianca Ortiz won fifth place. The team of Theresa Benavides, Bianca Ortiz, Neida Escamilla and Omar Salazar won second place team.  In Ready Writing Tiffany Deleon won second place while teammate Genny Bardon won 6th place.  In Current Issue and Events Markose Butler won second place, Omar Salazar won third place, and Natasha Riojas won 6th place.  The team of Markose Butler, Omar Salazar, Natasha Riojas, and Valerie Salgado won first place making them team champions.   

The Wildcat team continued its momentum leading into the second day of competition to win many more awards and honors.  In Literary Criticism Candice Masar won the district championship by winning 1st place and was followed by her teammate Megan Blair who won second place.  Teammates Maria P. Lopez and Bianca Ortiz won 8th and 10th place respectively.  The team of Candice Masar, Megan Blair, Maria P. Lopez, and Bianca Ortiz won the championship in Literary Criticism.  In Computer Applications Demi Cruz won 5th place while teammate Christopher John won 6th place.  In Poetry Interpretation Rosie Mendiola captured second place while teammate Magalieh Acosta won 4th place.  In Prose Interpretation Arkie Tassew became the district champion by winning first place while teammate Melissa Yebra won fourth place.  In Persuasive Speaking Valerie Salgado won fourth place and William Martinez won sixth place.  In Informative Speaking Arkie Tassew won 5th place while teammate Steven Martinez won 6th place.  The points accumulated in CX Debate, LD Debate, Prose/Poetry and Informative/Persuasive Speaking gave Carrizo Springs the second place speech team points 

In the Number Sense, Calculator, and Math events, the Wildcat team continued its tradition of excellence by sweeping the team championships and winning several of the top places.  In Number Sense Steven Martinez became district champion by winning first place while R. J. Saldivar won third place, Nicolas Costilla fourth place, David Ledesma 5th place.  The team of Steven Martinez, R.J. Saldivar, Nicolas Costilla, and David Ledesma won the championship plaque.  In Calculator Applications Carrizo Springs left no room for the competition as they swept the top four spots.  Kristen Blake became district champ when she won first place, Carol Howard won second place, Stephanie Estrada won third place, and R.J. Saldivar won fourth place.  The team of Kristen Blake, Carol Howard, Stephanie Estrada, and R.J. Saldivar won the championship plaque.   In Mathematics Nicolas Sunderland won third place, Ramon Medina won fifth place, Nicolas Costilla won eighth place, and Kristen Blake won tenth place.  The team of Nicolas Sunderland, Ramon Medina, Nicolas Costilla, and Kristen Blake won the championship plaque in mathematics.  

On March 31, 2007, the CSHS UIL One-Act Play competed in Lytle to complete the final part of the 2007 28AAA Literary/Academic Meet.    The cast and crew delivered a great performance that yielded a trip to the Area competition which will be held in Lytle TX. on April 7.  Individual awards include: Tech Honor Award – Noe Mireles, Honorable Mention All Star Cast – Ariel Romo. All Star Cast Members include Rosie Mendiola, Valerie Salgado and Melissa Yebra.  Best Actor Award went to Lucas Gonzales.  The rest of the cast and crew include:  Nick Rodriguez, Kevin Brashear, Julie Hernandez Markose Butler, Natalie Castro, Jerad Laxson, John (Bubba) Guajardo, Omar Narvaez, Jessica Mireles, Steven Martinez, and Jennifer Villalobos. 

In total the Wildcat UIL Academic team advanced twenty-nine to the regional competition and eighteen students to the One-Act Play Area competition. Dir.), Rosa Treviño (CX and LD Debate), Celia Villarreal (Informative/Persuasive Speaking), Olga Mireles (OAP director). 

Congratulations to all these fine competitors, their coaches and directors for an outstanding job. These students, coaches and directors spend countless hours in practice preparing for competition to bring honor and pride to our school and our community and they should be commended for their efforts. A heart felt thanks to the parents of these competitors for allowing them to participate and showcase their talents in academic competition.
