Carrizo
Springs JROTC History
The JROTC
Program at Carrizo Springs High School began in school year 1992-1993 in a
classroom in the lower “A” wing of the High School. The Senior Army Instructor was
Lieutenant Colonel Gerald King and Master Sergeant Rudy Velasquez. The program
grew for the next several years and in the 1995 - 1996 school year the High
School Building Trades classes built the current JROTC building which houses
classroom, indoor range, offices, and supply room.
1996 also saw
the departure of Master Sergeant Rudy Velasquez and the addition of Master
Sergeant Jose Villegas as the Army Instructor until 2002-2003 when Sergeant
First Class Raymond Martinez and Colonel Robert Henson came aboard as the Army
Instructor and Senior Army Instructor, respectively. This was also following
the retirement of Lieutenant Colonel King.
Since the
arrival in 2002 of Colonel Henson and Sergeant Martinez, the program has grown
and matured in a number of ways, for example:
The addition of the 17 element confidence course used for physical fitness
training
42 geographically pinpointed spots throughout the school property for use in
compass & land navigation
The addition of a ceremonial salute cannon for pre-game & parade color
guard activities
The implementation of a new comprehensive curriculum
And,
The initiation and implementation of a letterman’s criteria for award of a
school letter jacket in JROTC.
